Association of Chicana Activist (A.Ch.A.) was founded in 1991 in San Diego State University. Four female Mechistas (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan - M.E.Ch.A) organized a meeting where other Chicana students were invited to exchange ideas, and to design a plan of action. Therefore, A.Ch.A. was formed to focus on issues of La Mujer.

In its inception, the organization faced limitations with M.E.Ch.A. A.Ch.A. met criticism because it was thought to destabilize the power of M.E.Ch.A. It was suggested that the issues of Chicanas be dealt within the confines of M.E.Ch.A. Still, the founding members managed to give birth to a mother spirit. A.Ch.A. brought existence to "La Mestiza" within each and every one of its members. the energy force that the sisters of A.Ch.A. have created is a conglomeration of their life forces. Each individual Achista has given birth to "La Mestiza" within her. We begin to nurture and protect the neglected "niña" and to liberate the oppressed women within ourselves. An Achista is not only an activist, but also a warrior and goddess capable of confronting challenges and endless battles. She knows that throughout history, "La India y La Mestiza" have bestowed gifts of coraje to her. A.Ch.A. gives power to "La Mestiza;" confidence and faith in the self; the ability to empower one another; and to "uplift each other as we climb."
